CoolTech for Your Commission Check: Cool iPhone Cases

Another September has come and gone, and with the passing of summer, the world has once again been introduced to a new iPhone. This year, Apple has released (as it does every other year), the “s” model of their latest smartphone. The iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s+ are the latest iterations of these ubiquitous devices, with better cameras and a new 3D touch screen that can sense differences in how hard you press on it (with new “peek and pop” functionality, you can do things like preview emails and websites before opening them and view old photos while taking new ones). We’re not here to talk about the iPhone 6s, however. We’re here to talk about the thing that’s going to protect that new investment. Of course, with each new iPhone design comes the need to choose a new case. While I personally have a very hard stance against cases for smartphones (this article lays out the pros and cons pretty well), I’m considerably less against the idea when those cases add an extra layer of functionality to your phone. So if you’ve decided that the new iPhone’s features are awesome enough to warrant an upgrade, and you’re in the market for a new case as well, here are my recommendations for cool iPhone cases that you might not have known about.

3 Really Cool iPhone Cases for iPhone 6/6s

1. Anker Ultra Slim Extended Battery Case

Price: $39.99 The Anker Ultra Slim Extended Battery Case not only serves as a standard case that can protect your phone from drops, it also provides an additional 120% battery life for those days when you’re on the go and can’t get to your charger or an outlet. (This is the equivalent of 60 extra hours of music listening, 17 extra hours of phone conversations over 3G, 13 hours of video watching, 12 hours of web browsing, or 3 hours of 3D gaming. Not bad.) In addition to being The Wirecutter’s top pick for battery cases, I’m recommending this case because of its slim design. Remember what I said earlier about not liking cases in general? One of the main reasons is that cases tend to add extra bulk to the iPhone’s slim design. This case protects your phone and adds battery life while also being somewhat sleek.

2. Otterbox Commuter Wallet

Price: $32.91 That’s an oddly specific price...thanks Amazon. Anyway, the OtterBox Commuter Wallet comes from the brand that’s probably the best known for making highly protective cases. This particular case features a slot in the back that can hold up to 3 cards and 1 bill, which can help you slim down your daily carry by merging your phone and wallet. It also comes with a 1 year warranty, which is a plus.

3. Oaxis InkCase i6

Price: $99.00 Okay, I’m going to be straight with you all. One of the primary reasons I even decided to write this post was to share this case with you. The Oaxis InkCase i6 does a lot of the things that a normal case does. It snaps on easily and has a durable polycarbonate exterior that protects the back and edges of your phone. Like the Anker Ultra Slim case on this list, it is also extremely low-profile, adding just 4.2 mm to your phone. But what sets this case apart is that it provides an e-ink screen to the back of your phone. Translation: you get a SECOND SCREEN on the back of your phone where you can see notifications, check weather, and look at email without using up battery to power up your giant bright iPhone screen (the case runs on its own lithium-polymer battery). The display is always on, but consumes a very small amount of power. This. Is. The. Coolest. Thing. Ever. It’s won a bunch of design awards, and deservedly so. The cases for iPhone 6/6s are now available for pre-order, to begin shipping in November 2015, and they come in two colors––black and white. Of course, the biggest downside of this case is the price––at $99, it’s a big investment. But if you’re looking for that added layer of functionality that I was talking about earlier, this is probably the coolest iPhone case out there.
