“Rooowww…”
Mr. Whiskers was sitting on the living room floor staring at his cat bed, a sagging, blue-grey, padded fabric cube situated in the corner near my chenille loveseat. I turned and looked at him from the ladder where I was putting the finishing touches on our artificial Douglas Fir with handfuls of green and gold tinsel.
“What is it, Mr. Whiskers?” I asked, feigning concern.
“Reeeeeoooooowwwwwww…” he bawled, in one of his lower registers.
That’s when I saw it: His house stuck out like a sore thumb amidst the glitz and glimmer of the rest of the room’s holiday decor. I had really outdone myself this year, and while I consider myself meticulous, my attention to detail had somehow missed the slouching facade of the blue fabric cat bed wilting away in the room’s far nook.
“Well, it’s not like there are cat condos in the style of Christmas,” I said indignantly.
“Mowww,” Mr. Whiskers uttered with excitement.
“What do you mean there’s a Gingerbread-style cat house?” I bounded down from the ladder, tinsel falling to the floor, and opened my laptop on the coffee table to find the Gingerloaf cat house checkout page pulled up with the correct address filled out. Mr. Whiskers leapt onto the sectional and swatted at my purse.
“Merry Christmas, Mr. Whiskers,” I said.
