The Artist: Jonathan Schubert (Dallas, TX)
Jonathan Schubert is a graphic designer and illustrator based in Dallas, Texas who specializes in incredible vintage-inspired logos, typography, and branding. We've been huge fans of his work for a long time and were stoked to finally see his work on one of our bandanas.
After five years working as an in-house designer at Fossil, and two more at Dallas design agency Tractorbeam, Jon began freelancing full-time in 2017 and hasn't looked back since. Having created unbelievable work for Lowell Herb Co., Roark, Sundream Coffee, Tecovas, and countless others, Jon's ever-expanding design portfolio will probably be gracing one your favorite brands soon.
When he's not designing, you can find Jon jamming to dub reggae or living it up at Carnival celebrations from Texas to Trinidad & Tobabgo - all with a bandana around his neck to soak up the sweat and rum!

The Design: "Good Time"
For Jon, this design serves as a token of his appreciation for Carnival culture across the Caribbean. For Carnival 2019, Jon and his fiancé spent two weeks in Trinidad & Tobago (where she is from) enjoying parties, music, and some beach time with friends and family there. In Jon's words, "It was easily one of the best experiences I've had abroad - and we plan to do it again soon."
While Trinidad & Tobago lay claim to the Caribbean's largest and most renowned Carnival year to year, this bandana celebrates the Carnival culture of all across the region from which it originates in the west. Places such as Rio De Jainero, New Orleans, Jamaica, etc - each offer their own unique brand of the "Carnival" and, as such, are celebrated in this incredible, original piece.
In describing the aesthetic inspirations for the design, Jon told us that he "Considered actual art I've seen in Trinidad & Tobago - usually aimed at the wandering tourist but somehow still fresh and interesting, and fun to look at. The iconography / illustrations are usually very simple, mono-line, 1-3 colors - printed on rum cups, tee shirts, bags, etc."
He went to explain that he wanted this piece to convey the atmosphere and energy of Carnival, while providing an honest depiction of the aspects that he enjoys most about the celebration. "Fun and Sun, Rum and Done" - a message both optimistic and honest, is a not only a rough summary of the experience, itself - but of fleeting and precious life, which ought to be fully enjoyed before it's over forever.
The Charity: All Hands & Hearts (Mattapoisett, MA)
All Hands & Hearts is a volunteer-powered organization addressing the immediate and long-term needs of communities affected by natural disasters. AH&H works directly with local leaders and community members to build safer, more resilient schools, homes, and infrastructure in the wake of hurricanes and other devastating natural events.
Jon chose this incredible organization in honor of the many places that inspired his design. AH&H has played a huge role in relief efforts specifically in the wake of many hurricanes and tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.
