We import handmade, beautifully natural baskets from Bolgatanga, Ghana, a region famous for this craft. Working exclusively with women’s co-ops, we employ 500 weavers, paying them above fair-trade wages and making sure they have a supportive, family-friendly work environment where they can grow as artists and entrepreneurs.
Bolgatanga is a place of deep poverty. Electricity and convenient access to water don’t have a firm foothold yet. Neither does self-determination for women. When Ti-a started 20 years ago, we had to get permission from a weaver’s husband and tribal chief for her to work outside the home. Women are changing expectations today – within themselves and their villages – and we will be with them as they forge ahead.
Ti-a stands apart as one of the few woman of color owned businesses in our field. Owner Simbala Drammeh has seen and lived how small encounters can change the course of someone’s life. She believes in the bridges of humanity, and would love to have you showcase baskets that are made with such skill and pride. This is empowerment.
